Buffon and Juventus come close to Champions League records

Having not conceded a UEFA Champions League goal between 22 November in Seville and 9 May against Monaco, Juventus and Gianlugi Buffon are now high up the all-time competition rankings.

Kylian Mbappé's strike for Monaco tonight may not have stopped Juventus reaching the Cardiff final, but it cut short the bids by both the Italian club and keeper Gianluigi Buffon to top the UEFA Champions League all-time rankings for not conceding a goal.

Before tonight, Buffon had last been beaten in this competition nine minutes into the 3-1 group stage win at Sevilla on 22 November. Neto then took over for the 2-0 victory against Dinamo Zagreb that capped Juve's group campaign before Buffon returned for home and away clean sheets against both Porto and Barcelona – and last week shut out Monaco in the 2-0 semi-final first-leg success.

However, Mbappé's 69th-minute goal in Turin ended Buffon's run of not conceding at exctly ten hours' playing time. That puts him fifth on the all-time table for the longest unbreached run by a single goalkeeper in the UEFA Champions League, with the record still Jens Lehmann's 853 minutes for Arsenal between 18 October 2005 and 13 September 2006.

By getting to half-time still watertight, Juventus climbed from fifth to third in the standings for the longest sequence without shipping a goal in the competition, and after the break they also overtook Chelsea's 2007/08 686-minute spell. Eventually their run finished at 690 minutes, shy only of Arsenal's record of 995 from 2005/06, and so second overall.

Last Wednesday's clean sheet in Monaco was Juve's sixth in a row in the UEFA Champions League, a feat bettered only by Arsenal's ten in 2005/06 and AC Milan's seven the previous season.

Meanwhile, the second leg against Monaco, as well as being Buffon's 101st UEFA Champions League match, was his 150th game in European club competition. He is just the tenth player to achieve that mark, including fellow goalkeepers Iker Casillas and Pepe Reina.
