Following the UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw, we take a look at some of the choicest morsels thrown up by the eight ties.

Real Madrid v Paris

Matches: 14 February & 6 March
Team of the Year nominees: Madrid 11, Paris 5

  • The teams have met on six occasions with two wins apiece.
  • Cristiano Ronaldo was in the French capital to collect his Ballon d'Or last week.
  • Paris forward Ángel Di María won the UEFA Champions League with Madrid in 2014.
2015 highlights: Real Madrid 1-0 Paris

Fantasy Football angle: Eight of the top 20 Fantasy points scorers play for one or other of these clubs – but the holders have only one representative, Cristiano Ronaldo, whose nine goals and one assist helped him to 50 points. He may have his work cut out to beat Alphonse Areola, however; the Paris goalkeeper's 32 points make him the top-scoring custodian on the game.

Chelsea v Barcelona

Matches: 20 February & 14 March
Team of the Year nominees: Chelsea 1, Barcelona 4

  • Lionel Messi has never registered against Chelsea in eight previous matches, the most he has faced any club without scoring.
  • Chelsea have had the better of 12 previous meetings with Barcelona in UEFA competition, with four wins to the Liga side's three.
  • The Blues beat Barça 5-4 on aggregate in the 2004/05 round of 16 despite Ronaldinho's iconic memorable toe-poked finish for the Spanish side.

Fantasy Football angle: Eden Hazard is Chelsea's main man in Europe this season, picking up 36 points with three goals and three assists. Somewhat unexpectedly, Barça's top points scorer is their goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen keeping four clean sheets in his five appearances for 29 points overall.

Juventus v Tottenham

Matches: 13 February & 7 March
Team of the Year nominees: Juventus 5, Tottenham 4

  • The sides have never previously met competitively.
  • Erik Lamela faced Juventus five times when he was at Roma, losing three games and winning once. He was sent off once and never scored.
  • Colombian pair Davinson Sánchez and Juan Cuadrado are international team-mates.

Fantasy Football angle: Juve's usually watertight defence shipped five goals in the group stage – although they still managed three clean sheets, helping Andrea Barzagli to 21 points. The defender might have his work cut out keeping Harry Kane in check, however; 37 points for the Spurs striker, thanks to six goals and one assist.

Bayern v Beşiktaş

Matches: 20 February & 14 March
Team of the Year nominees: Bayern 3, Beşiktaş 0

  • Bayern beat Beşiktaş 2-0 both away and home in the 1997/98 group stage – the teams' only previous meetings.
  • Beşiktaş winger Ricardo Quaresma scored twice in the first ten minutes of Porto’s quarter-final tie against Bayern in April 2015.
  • Mario Gomez – a 2013 UEFA Champions League winner with Bayern under Jupp Heynckes – spent a season on loan at Beşiktaş.

Fantasy Football angle: This could come down to a straight shoot-out between each team's centre-forward, Robert Lewandowski and Cenk Tosun. The Bayern man has 26 points, thanks to three goals and an assist; with four goals and two assists, the Beşiktaş striker is his team's top scorer with 33.

Basel v Manchester City

Matches: 13 February & 7 March
Team of the Year nominees: Basel 0, Manchester City 3

  • The sides have never previously met.
  • Basel were paired with City's rivals Manchester United in Group A this season, losing 3-0 at Old Trafford but pulling off a 1-0 win at home.

Fantasy football angle: Josep Guardiola's side have been sweeping almost all before them at home and abroad this season, but centre-backs could have a key say in this one. Basel's Michael Lang picked up 40 points in the group stage, the second-highest scoring defender in the game posting two goals, one assist and four clean sheets; City's John Stones added three goals to his two clean sheets for a total of 33 points.

Porto v Liverpool

Matches: 14 February & 6 March
Team of the Year nominees: Porto 0, Liverpool 0

Highlights: Liverpool 7-0 Spartak Moskva
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in four previous meetings, winning at home and drawing away in the 2007/08 group stage and 2000/01 UEFA Cup quarter-finals.
  • Porto scored five without reply the last time they faced English opposition, thumping already-qualified Leicester City on matchday six last season.
  • Miguel Layún scored on his only previous trip to Merseyside, registering for Watford in a 2-2 draw with Everton. It was one of only three Premier League appearances for the Mexican.

Fantasy Football angle: There is virtually nothing between each team's attacking spearhead in the Fantasy stakes so far – both Vincent Aboubakar and Mohamed Salah have picked up 36 points. The Porto man has five goals and two assists, with Liverpool's Egyptian managing the same number of goals and one assist fewer despite playing a game more.

Sevilla v Manchester United

Matches: 21 February & 13 March
Team of the Year nominees: Sevilla 0, Manchester United 4

  • The sides have never previously met.
  • The tie pits together the last two UEFA Europa League winners, last season's victors United and a Sevilla side who triumphed a record three seasons running between 2013/14 and 2015/16.
  • Sevilla have already visited north-west England this season, claiming a 2-2 draw against Liverpool in Group E. The Spanish side recovered from 3-0 down to earn a point in the return last month.
Highlights: Manchester United's European set

Fantasy Football angle: A straightforward head-to-head between the teams' top Fantasy points scorers; Wissam Ben Yedder is the joint second-highest scorer in this season's competition with six goals, worth 37 points. That is five points more than United's top scorer, defender Daley Blind managing a goal, an assist – and, in his day job, three clean sheets.

Shakhtar Donetsk v Roma

Matches: 21 February & 13 March
Team of the Year nominees: Shakhtar 0, Roma 0

  • Shakhtar beat Roma in the 2010/11 round of 16, winning 3-2 in Italy and 3-0 at home.
  • Shakhtar midfielder Fred and Roma keeper Alisson were team-mates at Brazilian club Internacional in 2013.

Fantasy Football angle: A direct confrontation between Shakhtar's right-sided midfielder Marlos and Roma left-back Aleksandar Kolarov. Both are their clubs' top Fantasy points scorer so far; two goals and two assists have helped the Brazilian to 29 points, while Kolarov's 31-point haul is helped by a goal and an assist to go with his three clean sheets.
