Ancelotti in awe of Rossoneri

Coach Carlo Ancelotti said AC Milan at times played their "best football" of the season to defeat PSV Eindhoven.

Goals from Andriy Shevchenko and Jon Dahl Tomasson helped AC Milan take a major step towards reaching their second UEFA Champions League final in three years at the San Siro. The duo scored at the end of both halves to end PSV Eindhoven's 20-match unbeaten run and leave the newly crowned Eredivisie champions with an uphill battle in next week's second leg against a side who have now not conceded a goal in seven Champions League matches.

Carlo Ancelotti, Milan coach
In the first half we played the best football of our campaign but we can't celebrate yet. We really did very well in the first 45 minutes but in the second half we did not. We began to focus too much on defending and counterattacking, but it's normal to suffer at this level. PSV are a good team and played very well. The second leg will be very difficult but overall tonight was a great result.

Guus Hiddink, PSV coach
It's frustrating to create six good chances against one of the best teams in the world and fail to score. If we had only one of Milan's forwards we'd have won this match. We started badly in the first half but eventually took control of the game and played well despite Milan leading. A 1-0 defeat would have been ok, but that second goal has made the task harder. To come from 2-0 down will be very difficult, but we'll try anyway. The second leg will be very tough and Milan will be very dangerous on the counterattack.

Andriy Shevchenko, Milan goalscorer
It was a very difficult game and we are very tired because PSV forced us to run for the whole 90 minutes. They don't play at a high tempo but they can control the possession very well, they never kick the ball away. But I think we used the right tactic to win this game - we managed to win ball in midfield and restart with quick counterattacks. Tomasson's goal was very important. We have a good advantage now but the tie is still in the balance.

Kaká, Milan midfield player
I'm very happy with this victory and with the assist I made for Shevchenko. I was also close to scoring in the first half but [Heurelho] Gomes made a couple of good saves. We were a bit tired in the second half but that's normal because we are playing so many games in just a few days. However, we're just two games from achieving a great success and we don't want to stop now.

Alex, PSV defender
It's not easy to play against Milan at San Siro but I think we did quite well. Unfortunately we did not manage to use the many chances we created during the whole game, while they punished every mistake we made. However, we are still optimistic ahead of the return leg because tonight we proved to be at their same level. It will be difficult to come back from 2-0 but not impossible.
