Undisclosed fee
The 19-year-old joins from Fluminense FC for an undisclosed fee and will link up with his new employers after the FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands. "I'm now a Benfica player," Diego announced. "I went to the World Youth Championship with my situation already clarified and when the tournament is over I will return to Brazil before heading to Portugal to play for Benfica."
Shoulder injury
His involvement in the Netherlands could be over sooner than he anticipated after picking up a shoulder injury in Wednesday's 1-0 win against Switzerland. It was Diego's role with the Brazil Under-17 side that first caught the attention of Benfica's scouts, before a spell of 27 games for Rio de Janeiro club Fluminense last term, convinced them to make their move.
