Liverpool face Kewell loss

Australia midfielder Harry Kewell will miss Liverpool FC's qualifying campaign after undergoing a hernia operation.

European setback
Surgery is likely to keep the 26-year-old former Leeds United AFC player sidelined for up to six weeks, meaning he will not return to first-team action until after the third qualifying round of the Champions League, should Liverpool progress that far. Kewell will also miss Rafael Benítez's side's opening Premiership fixture at Middlesbrough FC.

Unrelated injury
The Merseyside club have stated that the injury is not related to the adductor muscle tear Kewell suffered in Liverpool's Champions League triumph over AC Milan, which forced him to be replaced by Vladimír Šmicer after just 23 minutes.
