Rijkaard to extend reign

FC Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has reached an agreement to extend his contract at Camp Nou until 2009.

'Agreement reached'
The 42-year-old Dutchman has agreed to commit himself to the Catalan club until June 2009, adding two years to his previous deal. Rijkaard said today: "We have reached an agreement until 2009. The club have faith in me and the technical team, and the most important thing over the next four years will be to continue our work and take each day as it comes. I will definitely sign after our tour of Asia."

Successful spell
Rijkaard has enjoyed a successful two-season stay at the Camp Nou, guiding Barcelona to second place in the Primera División in the 2003/04 campaign, before masterminding their 17th Spanish title triumph last term.

'Great pride'
He joins first-teamers Deco, Samuel Eto'o, Víctor Valdés and Xavi Hernández in securing a contract extension. "There are great demands at a club like this, so you always need patience. But it is a source of great pride to work here," the coach added.
