Del Bosque praises Madrid authority

Real Madrid CF coach Vicente del Bosque hailed his side's six-goal performance against KRC Genk.

Real Madrid CF coach Vicente del Bosque claimed his side had "acted with real authority" as they overpowered KRC Genk 6-0 in their UEFA Champions League Group C meeting at the Santiago Bernabéu.

'Extremely good football'
While Genk were stubborn for the majority of the first half, a rampant Madrid scored two goals in the minute before half-time. The first was an own goal by Didier Zokora and the second came from the boot of full-back Michel Salgado. "We acted with real authority, playing efficiently and producing some extremely good football at times,” he said.

Floodgates open
The floodgates were then opened after the break as Madrid poured forward to score a further four unanswered goals. Luis Figo converted a penalty on 55 minutes, before Guti struck the fourth nine minutes later. The Spanish giants ruthlessly plundered a fifth through Albert Celades (74), before Raúl González (76) rounded things off with a viciously struck sixth.

'Contained us well'
Despite the nature of the scoreline, Del Bosque reserved some praise for Genk, particularly their first-half performance. "Genk contained us well in the first half and the final result made them look a lot worse than they really were," he said. "They were well organised, if a little inexperienced in some areas.”

'Doing our job'
Genk coach Stef Vergossen also believed that his side had started the game well, but was keen to stress that it was the two goals on the stroke of half-time which had broken his team. "For over 43 minutes I felt that Genk played well," he said. "We were disciplined and were doing our job and I felt we could have scored at least one goal."

Killer blow
It was then that he felt the killer blow came. "The team just couldn't get over the blow of the two goals just before half-time," Vergossen added. "We tried to respond but we left further gaps at the back and you can't do that against a team like Real Madrid. We could never compete with the individual talent of the Madrid players. They played very well and created lots of problems."

'Three more points'
Del Bosque was pleased that his side had proved capable of scoring almost at will, despite the absence of Ronaldo and playmaker Zinedine Zidane. “We created lots of opportunities and if you do that you score lots of goals,” he said. “The important thing is we have three more points to help us go further in Europe."

Runaway leaders
Madrid look to have an insurmountable lead at the top of Group C, having collected a maximum six points from their first two games. With AEK Athens the next team on the menu, Madrid will take some beating.
