FC Schalke 04 have sacked Ralf Rangnick three days after the coach announced that he would be leaving the German club at the end of the season.

European disappointment
The 47-year-old, who had been unhappy that disagreements with general manager Rudi Assauer had been leaked to the media, failed to lead Schalke into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, although they will play in the UEFA Cup after finishing third in Group E.

Only option
Speaking at a press conference, Assauer said: "We didn't have any other choice. There was disharmony which could not be mended." Assauer added the decision to let Rangnick go early was unanimous among board members. It is not yet known whether a new coach will be appointed in time for Schalke's return to training after the winter break in Germany on 4 January.

Ten points adrift
Rangnick replaced Jupp Heynckes in September 2004 and guided the Ruhr club to second spot in the Bundesliga and a place in the German Cup final. Schalke are currently fourth in the table, ten points behind leaders FC Bayern München following Saturday's 1-0 home win against 1. FSV Mainz 05.
