Hiddink happy with point

PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink refused to concede defeat after his side's 1-1 draw in Dortmund.

Despite the fact his side could only manage a draw with BV Borussia Dortmund in the Westfalenstadion, PSV Eindhoven coach Guus Hiddink refused to admit his side are out of contention in UEFA Champions League Group A.

'Dortmund in control'
Although PSV now need to win both of their remaining games to stand any chance of progressing to the second group stage, Hiddink said that he was pleased with his side's overall performance, particularly after half-time. "First of all I must say that Dortmund were in control of the first half, had two or three good chances, and we were lucky to only be a goal down at half-time.

'Changes paid off'
"After the break I made some changes and they paid off. We tried to play more offensively, put Dortmund under a lot of pressure but were not sharp enough in front of goal. We dominated the second half."

Bruggink delight
When Arnold Bruggink cancelled out Jan Koller's opener with a fine volleyed equaliser two minutes into the second period, PSV must have believed their luck was finally turning. The striker was delighted with his goal, saying: "It was a perfect shot, but it is always a great feeling to be on target."

'Fine piece of football'
The goal earned praise from both Hiddink and his opposite number, Matthias Sammer who said: "Naturally, I did not like to see a goal scored against us, but it was a fine piece of football."

Sammer not pleased
Sammer was less pleased overall than his Dutch counterpart, and he was particularly unhappy with the quality of his side’s finishing. "In the first half we played really well, defended deep and tried to hit PSV on the break," he said. "Going into half-time with only one goal to show for our efforts was simply not enough."

'Had to win'
"PSV played well in the second half, knowing they had to win, and they were lifted by the half-time score from Arsenal [where AJ Auxerre were winning 2-0], so came out to attack. However, I am furious that four players simply stood around in the opponents' penalty area after missing a chance in the last minute. It is alright to be angry, but wait until after the game."

Wide open
Both coaches agreed that Group A is still wide open. "I knew before the start that the results would not go our way, because they never do. We have always had to work hard in order to achieve anything and will have to continue doing this," said Sammer.

'Very exciting'
Hiddink added: "I can assure you that this group is still very exciting, and we are still in with a chance of reaching the next round." Goalscorer Bruggink joked: "All we have to do now is beat both Auxerre and then Arsenal - it is as simple as that!"
