Iran midfielder Javad Nekounam, fresh from the FIFA World Cup, is to help CA Osasuna in their unprecedented bid to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage.
World Cup experience
The 25-year-old, who represented his country twice in Germany and has been capped 77 times, has been given a two-year contract after leaving Al Sharjah FC of the United Arab Emirates. If all goes well, Nekounam could extend his deal by a further 12 months. Osasuna, who are also said to be close to signing the 22-year-old Villarreal CF midfielder Héctor Font, will enter the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round next month, with one two-legged tie standing between them and a first entry into the competition proper. They finished fourth in the Primera División last season.
