Bayern need to keep Inter at bay

Both FC Bayern München and FC Internazionale Milano have qualified from Group B so the only question remains as to who will occupy first place. The advantage lies with the home team as they have a two-point advantage over their Italian visitors and only need a draw at the Fußball Arena München to go one better than their achievement in each of the three previous campaigns when they ended the group stage as runners-up.

• Three successive wins have arrested a disappointing start to Inter's fifth group campaign in a row after they lost both their opening fixtures, including the Matchday 2 game at home to Bayern. Claudio Pizarro's 81st-minute opener and Lukas Podolski's goal in added time gave the German side a notable success. Inter also lost their discipline as Zlatan Ibrahimović and Fabio Grosso both received late red cards.

Away victories
• Before that game the teams had only met on one occasion in UEFA club competition, in the 1988/89 UEFA Cup third round. Both enjoyed notable away victories, although Bayern were the happier at the end of the second leg, progressing on away goals after trumping Inter's 2-0 victory in Germany with a 3-1 success in Milan. That was their last win in Italy before that 27 September success.

• Bayern have played nine home games against Italian visitors in European competition and they will consider just three wins, three draws and three defeats a disappointing return.

• When Inter won at Bayern in 1988 it was part of three successive wins in Germany. They are unbeaten in their last four visits (three draws and a win) and their record should give them confidence with only two defeats suffered in 12 away games, which include six draws and four wins.

Magnificent start
• While Inter's fortunes in this campaign have received a sizeable boost, Bayern's form has dipped a little after their magnificent start when they won their first three games, the same as a year ago, without conceding a goal. On Matchday 4 they dropped their first points while maintaining their defensive prowess in a 0-0 home draw with Sporting Clube de Portugal.

• Three weeks later they conceded their first goals of the tournament in a 2-2 draw at FC Spartak Moskva. Claudio Pizarro scored twice to give the German champions the lead after Maxym Kalynychenko's early free-kick had put the home team ahead. Radoslav Kováč found the net with 18 minutes remaining to earn the Russian side their second point in five games.

• Qualification was secured for the Nerazzurri by Hernán Crespo's first UEFA Champions League goal in just under a year which put paid to Sporting's own hopes of advancing at the San Siro two weeks ago. If they win in Bavaria they will be going through as group winners for the fourth time in the last five editions. In the other game in the section, Sporting require a draw at home to Spartak to enter the UEFA Cup.
