Anderson to fill in for Cris at Lyon

French champions Olympique Lyonnais have signed Anderson from SL Benfica – and will ask the €4m defender to fill the gap left by the injured captain Cris.

The 27-year-old has joined Lyon on a four-year contract and will help to replace injured captain and compatriot Cris at the Stade de Gerland. "I know what Cris represents here and I will do my best to fill in for him," said Anderson. Cris will be out of action until the new year after tearing knee ligaments on the opening weekend of the Ligue 1 season.

Out of favour
Capped once by Brazil in 2005, Anderson was judged surplus to requirements at Benfica where he had made 48 Portuguese Liga appearances over the last two seasons. He will not be fit to make his debut in Sunday's Lyon v AS Saint-Etienne derby. Anderson previously played for SC Corinthians in Sao Paulo.
