Smith enjoys another 'great night'

Walter Smith praised the "concentration levels" and "pride and determination" of Rangers FC as they shared a goalless draw with FC Barcelona at Ibrox.

The Rangers FC manager Walter Smith praised both the "concentration levels" and "pride and determination" of his players as they maintained their unbeaten start to Group E by drawing 0-0 at home against FC Barcelona. Visiting coach Frank Rijkaard agreed it was "a good match" and is looking forward to another when the joint-leaders meet again in two weeks' time.

Walter Smith, Rangers manager
I'm delighted with my players' performance, I can't praise them highly enough. We were up against the best football team in the section and it was always going to be tough. But we were excellent. In football, you always expect a chance or two, we never really had that tonight, but I'm very pleased with winning a point. We're still feeling our way in the Champions League, this team has progressed a long way in a short time. In this section we've come up against three very good teams and we haven't lost a game. That says a lot for the players.

We're performing above our own expectations at the moment. Our players have shown real pride and determination. Obviously we're not as good a team as Barcelona but we work as hard as any club in the competition. If we could get a decent result against Barcelona in the next game, that would be incredible. But who knows? If we progress to the last 16 then this was a great result. But, even if we don't, it was a really great night for the club.

Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona coach
We started well and had good possession, but we were disappointed not to score. In general it was a good match, although we know we have some things we must work on. The team played well enough to have won, though Rangers defended very well. In the UEFA Champions League a draw away from home is not a bad result. Rangers have shown already in this group what they are capable of. They are a very strong side and their position in the group shows that. Rangers have the chance to progress from the section in their own hands and they must be pleased with what they've achieved.

I'm disappointed we couldn't find the goal, but I won't judge individuals because of that. I know when we play at Camp Nou we will definitely be playing for the win. But, in the wonderful world of football, anything can happen. Rangers showed with their result against Lyon what they can do, so we'll certainly show them maximum respect. It's very difficult to predict what happens in football.
