Bremen keep Wiese but lose Boenisch

Tim Wiese has extended his contract with UEFA Champions League contenders Werder Bremen — but Sebastian Boenisch has been ruled out for three months.

'Super club'
Wiese, 25, has prolonged the deal until 2012 having arrived from 1.FC Kaiserslautern two years ago. "Where else should I go?" he said. "Werder are a superb club. I like playing here and I hope that I can celebrate some successes with Werder." Coach Thomas Schaaf was also delighted, saying: "Tim Wiese has constantly continued his development. Therefore, we are happy that we will continue together."

Knee surgery
Boenisch however will not be available for selection after learning he requires surgery to his right knee. The 20-year-old, who arrived at the Weserstadion at the end of August from FC Schalke 04, picked up the injury against BV Borussia Dortmund on 14 September. Bremen lie third in the Bundesliga table after nine matches, but are not fairing so well in the UEFA Champions League, as they have lost both Group C fixtures ahead of Wednesday's visit of S.S. Lazio.
