Club Atlético de Madrid coach Javier Aguirre described his side's success at PSV Eindhoven as a "fantastic result" as a first-half Sergio Agüero double and Maniche effort after the interval handed the capital club a notable win in Group D. His PSV counterpart Huub Stevens found their comprehensive defeat "hard to take", blaming the manner of their loss on the fact that the Spanish side were able to fully capitalise on the mistakes that his team made.

Javier Aguirre, Atlético coach
It was a fantastic result for us in our first match of the competition and to start the group stage in such a manner is excellent for us. It is a great way to begin but we have to remember that we still have five matches to go at this stage of the competition before we qualify for the next round. We must now strive to take more points and build on this result, especially during our three home matches that we have still to play. The defence played a major part in our success as they were very well organised and defended solidly. Thanks to this win, we are now really looking forward to the next match at home to Olympique de Marseille.

Huub Stevens, PSV coach
We wanted a good result today but to lose 3-0 is very hard to take. However, I would rather lose 3-0 once than 1-0 three times. We started well and were in control but they made the most of our mistakes in the game. Atlético have a great squad and a lot of quality. We have to learn from this game so we can play better in the next match. The overall result was very disappointing, but we have lost what was a very difficult game. Atlético were waiting for us to make mistakes and when we did they punished us. They struck at exactly the right moments. They played fine football, using quick combinations. We have to take this disappointment now and we'll see how we get on in the next match but it will be difficult.
