Evanilson despair for Dortmund

BV Borussia Dortmund's Brazilian winger Evanilson could miss the rest of 2003.

BV Borussia Dortmund have suffered a major headache before the new season after winger Evanilson suffered another serious knee injury.

Twisted knee
The 26-year-old Brazilian was hurt in last night's 2-1 German League Cup success against VfL Bochum. Six minutes after replacing Lars Ricken as a 64th-minute substitute, Evanilson twisted his left knee while helping out in defence. He was carried off the pitch on a stretcher with a torn cruciate ligament and cartilage damage.

Original injury
It is thought Evanilson could be be out for up to six months, which would mean him missing both legs of Dortmund's UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie and then the group stage, should they progress that far. It is a bitter blow for the player who had only just recovered from a torn knee ligament, which he suffered last April.

Leverkusen worry
Elsewhere in Germany, Bayer 04 Leverkusen have some concerns of their own after international defender Carsten Ramelow had to leave the club's Swiss training camp with an achilles tendon problem. Club captain Jens Nowotny has also departed for more rehabilitation on his cruciate ligament problem.
