Van Buyten bemoans blunt Bayern

Defenders are usually satisfied with a clean sheet, but FC Bayern München centre-back Daniel Van Buyten told uefa.com his side's goalless draw at home to Juventus had left him feeling deflated.

Defenders are usually satisfied with a clean sheet, but centre-back Daniel Van Buyten conceded FC Bayern München's goalless stalemate with Juventus left him deflated.

Rearguard action

A combination of wasteful finishing and a determined rearguard action from their Italian visitors at the Fuβball Arena München meant Bayern missed out on a second successive victory in UEFA Champions League Group A. Van Buyten had sparked his side's 3-0 win at Maccabi Haifa FC on Matchday 1 by scoring the opener, but there was little evidence of the Belgian's attacking instincts against the Bianconeri, who also managed to contain Bayern's habitual suppliers of goals to record a second successive group-stage draw.

'Disappointed'

"If you look at the match as a whole, we have the right to be a little bit disappointed," Van Buyten told uefa.com. "Juventus are a great team, and they played well, but we showed in the first half that we could put them in danger and we had chances to score. We're disappointed not to have scored, not to have won this match and not to be top of the table with six points."

Ribéry magic
A Van Buyten slip in the second-half allowed Vincenzo Iaquinta a clear-cut chance to claim the three points for Ciro Ferrara's side, but the Italian international forward failed to hit the target, preventing a promising night for Bayern being transformed into a bitterly disappointing one. In a first 45 minutes that Bayern dominated, Thomas Müller and Miroslav Klose both went close but it was a moment of Franck Ribéry magic that almost broke the deadlock on 19 minutes.

'Individual brilliance'

"We talked about it at half-time, and he was really disappointed not to have scored," revealed Van Buyten, who watched his team-mate snake past two Juve defenders before chipping narrowly over Gianluigi Buffon's crossbar. "It would have been a great goal. Little by little, Franck is getting back into the sort of form he was in during his best times here, and he has to try and carry on in the same vein. When you have a Franck Ribéry in your side, you really enjoy matches, because there are always some moments of individual brilliance where he shows the full extent of his talent."

Bordeaux dates

The Frenchman's inspiration will be needed on Matchday 3 with Bayern due in Ribéry's native country. FC Girondins de Bordeaux defeated Haifa on Wednesday to move level on points with Louis van Gaal's men at the top of the section, and Van Buyten acknowledged the upcoming back-to-back matches against the French champions could make or break his team's ambitions in the competition.

Away danger
"It's going to be an important match, I watch Ligue 1 a lot, and they're a tough team," said the 31-year-old, who knows French football well having spent three seasons at Olympique de Marseille. "They're in form, consistent, the reigning champions and are playing well again this year. It's not going to be an easy game, but we also have one or two elements in attack that can be dangerous in away matches. We're going to continue working hard, and try and get something away from home."
