Fatos Beqiraj put GNK Dinamo Zagreb on course for a place in the UEFA Champions League play-offs by scoring the only goal of their third qualifying round opener against FC Sheriff.

Sheriff, bidding for their first appearance in the group stage of Europe's premier club competition, had kept successive clean sheets in eliminating FC Ulisses, but were behind after 14 minutes when the Montenegro striker scored his first goal of the season.

It came from an excellent pass by captain Milan Badelj and was followed a quarter of an hour later by Tadej Apatič shooting wide when well placed at the other end.

Sheriff upped their game after the restart and while they threatened again via the head of Aleksandar Pešić and substitute Stanislav Ivanov, they were unable to level the tie ahead of next week's second leg.
