Caught in time: France '84 player by player

Two years to the day until the final of UEFA EURO 2016, UEFA.com looks back to the 1984 tournament in France with the help of one of the members of the victorious Les Bleus squad, Jean-François Domergue, who has been studying the above photograph.

Joël Bats (goalkeeper)
Joël was like our poet, our writer. He was always focused, always loved the written word. He was always intrigued by poems and literature.

Patrick Battiston (right-back)
Patrick was always the wise one, a fabulous guy. He was somebody who really loved education, and he's still in football now.

Maxime Bossis (centre-back)
A calming influence. He possessed some very good qualities in terms of intelligence, technique, tactics and athleticism – a huge number of attributes, but a calming influence. Always calm and serene; even if he was nervous you couldn't tell.

Yvon Le Roux (centre back)
The man from Brittany. He was solid. He was also a fantastic guy – very nice.

Jean Tigana (midfielder)
The metronome. He was an extremely remarkable player. He had a lot of qualities.

Luis Fernandez (midfielder)
Luis was Luis. There were positive moments and negative moments. But overall, a good guy. A guy with values and behaviour that was sometimes a little bit exuberant compared with ours.

Michel Platini (midfielder)
Ah, Michel. Talking about him is always difficult given the modesty he has. But even here, in this photo, you can see something. You see something there. I don't know but I think that when we won – he had just won the European Cup Winners' Cup – it was the end of the season and there was a need for some recovery. The pressure he was under: we talk about pressure but we were never in his position in this respect. And he never made us feel it like he did. That was his strength, to have that modesty.

Alain Giresse (midfielder)
Ah Gigi. He taught me about football. I started with him at Bordeaux and we were together in Marseille. He was sensitive and fragile, but also liked to live life and meet with people who appreciated him.

Bernard Lacombe (forward)
Bernard was a little bit like Alain. They were both quite deep in some ways, with a lot of family values. They were people with important values.

Bruno Bellone (forward)
Ah, Bruno. Bruno was from the south. He was a lovely guy. It's always a pleasure to meet and to see each other again. Very, very nice.

Jean-François Domergue (left-back)
There are the players and the trophy too. We were all quite extrovert with our emotions, so I think [you can see] it was a source of real pleasure. I would say I'm someone who is very calm. I like to laugh, I like to share things. It's always difficult to talk about yourself. It makes me uneasy.

The team
It was a moment, a moment of life, a stage of life. That's how I see it, but for me, when I talk about this, it's a real pleasure. We see a photo and we talk about it. And we notice the way in which we talk about it: the passion, the pleasure. This is very important.
