Slovenia bounced back from their opening UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E loss in Estonia as Milivoje Novakovič's penalty condemned Switzerland to a second defeat from as many fixtures.
The visitors dominated proceedings early on, pushing hard down the flanks. In the third minute Valon Behrami sent in a header from a Ricardo Rodriguez cross but Samir Handanovič made a comfortable stop. The Swiss might have taken the lead in the 14th minute as Xherdan Shaqiri slalomed his way into the box but had his strike blocked; when Granit Xhaka latched onto the rebound, Handanovič saved from close range.
With Switzerland having much of the possession, Slovenia did not threaten until the 22th minute. Novakovič shot over the bar and later Philippe Senderos got in the way of Zlatan Ljubijankič's effort. The away team were spurred to respond, Haris Seferovič smashing an attempt onto the post. Rodriguez was then narrowly off target in the 42nd minute, and moments later Seferovič received the ball in front of goal only for Handanovič to be the hero once again.
Introducing Jasmin Kurtič for Ljubijankič, Slovenia started the second half in better shape but soon the Swiss returned to the front foot, Shaqiri firing off target and Handanovič frustrating both Rodriguez and Gökhan Inler.
Yet against this backdrop Slovenia somehow scored. When Dejan Lazarevič released Kevin Kampl in the 79th minute, he burst into the box and Johan Djorou took him down. Novakovič's spot kick promptly beat the dive of Yann Sommer. Switzerland threw everything back into attack but, after their opening loss at home to England, were beaten again.
