  • Russia got the better of England in qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008, finishing second in the group behind Croatia, who won 3-2 at Wembley in their final qualifier to eliminate Steve McClaren's team.
  • In the two direct confrontations England won 3-0 at Wembley thanks to a couple of Michael Owen goals but lost 2-1 in Moscow. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored twice after England had led 1-0, through Wayne Rooney, at half-time.
  • The Soviet Union defeated England 3-1 in Frankfurt at EURO '88 to send Bobby Robson's side home with three successive defeats; Valeriy Lobanovskiy's victors went on to reach the final.

  • England and Wales, both members of the United Kingdom, have met on 101 occasions, England winning 66 matches and Wales 14.
  • Annual opponents in the British Home Championship, which ran for a century until 1984, England and Wales have met just four times in the three decades since.
  • England triumphed 2-0 at home and 1-0 away en route to qualifying for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, then 2-0 away and 1-0 at home to assist their qualifying bid for UEFA EURO 2012. Ashley Young was the last player to score in the fixture.
  • The majority of players in Chris Coleman's Wales squad ply their trade in England's Premier League or Championship.

  • England overcame Slovakia 2-1 in Bratislava and Middlesbrough en route to qualifying for the UEFA EURO 2004 finals. Those were the first matches between the nations.
  • The only subsequent meeting took place at Wembley in March 2009, when England cruised to a 4-0 friendly win with two-goal Wayne Rooney among the scorers.
