Nice has used a €2m donation from UEFA – a sum given to all ten UEFA EURO 2016 host cities – to upgrade football facilities, the centrepiece of the work being the laying of a new artificial pitch at the Stade Bob Rémond.
The turf was replaced in seven weeks and, upon completion, resident club Cavigal Football, who have 465 members on their books this season, not only had a state-of-the-art surface with integrated watering but also secure protection nets around the perimeter.
At an inauguration ceremony on Wednesday, attended by representatives from the city's sports clubs and UEFA EURO 2016 mascot Super Victor, Nice mayor and president of the Nice Côte d'Azur metropolis, Christian Estrosi, hailed the Cavigal club as a "key part of Nice's sporting life".
Cavigal alumni include Nice forward Alexy Bosetti – currently on loan at Norwegian side Sarpsborg – and former professionals Dominique Baratelli, Daniel Sanchez and Éric Roy.
"We want to thank UEFA and we hope to transform UEFA EURO 2016 into a fantastic party for the city of Nice, for France and for the whole of Europe," added Estrosi.
