- The countries met for the first time since 2008 in November 2015, Belgium coming from behind to defeat Italy 3-1 in a Brussels friendly. Jan Vertonghen, Kevin De Bruyne and Michy Batshuayi scored for the hosts in reply to Antonio Candreva's early strike.
- That was only the fourth victory for Belgium over the Azzurri in 21 meetings, their sole competitive triumph coming in the quarter-finals of the 1972 UEFA European Championship. They won 2-1 in Brussels after a goalless draw in Milan to eliminate the holders.
- The nations have met twice at the EURO final tournament, a goalless draw in Turin in 1980 enabling Belgium to reach the final at the hosts' expense. Twenty years later Italy helped to eliminate the UEFA EURO 2000 co-hosts at the group stage with a 2-0 victory in Brussels, Francesco Totti and Stefano Fiore scoring.

- Matches between these countries have traditionally been tight, with four of the last six fixtures drawn and Belgium winning the other two by a one-goal margin.
- Two of those draws – 2-2 in Brussels, 0-0 in Dublin – came in qualifying for the 1988 UEFA European Championship as Ireland reached the finals for the first time. There have been no subsequent meetings in this competition.
- The most recent games took place in November 1997 as Belgium defeated Ireland 3-2 on aggregate in a play-off for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Luc Nilis scored in both legs for the Red Devils.

- Co-hosts Belgium, coached by Robert Waseige, defeated Sweden 2-1 in the opening match of UEFA EURO 2000 thanks to goals from Bart Goor and Émile Mpenza. However, neither team reached the quarter-finals.
- At the Friends Arena in June 2014, the countries met for the first time since that Brussels encounter. Visitors Belgium won 2-0 thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Eden Hazard.
- Belgium defeated Sweden home and away in qualifying for the 1954 FIFA World Cup, with Sweden turning the tables for the 1962 tournament – although they did not qualify for the finals in Chile.
