In an exciting finish to the match, Jan Koller struck twice in quick succession – on 75 and 86 minutes – to make it 3-2, Michalis Constantinou drew Cyprus level on 88 minutes only for Smicer to win the match for the Czechs a minute later.
Swiss finish third
Switzerland beat Hungary 2-1 to take third place after Hungary had a goal disallowed seconds from time. Switzerland went ahead after 53 minutes through Ludovic Magnin’s long-range effort and they doubled their lead with a Hakan Yakin header three minutes later.
Late drama
Hungary pulled one back through Gábor Gyepes with nine minutes to go and went close to snatching a dramatic equaliser in the final minute. However, their joy was short-lived as Cypriot referee Socrates Socratous disallowed the shot from substitute Attila Tököli for a foul on the Swiss keeper Fabrice Borer.
