Article body
New Scotland manager Berti Vogts has appointed former Scottish international Tommy Burns as his assistant.
Celtic role
The German, who took over the reins on 13 February, said on Wednesday he was delighted to have secured the services of 45-year-old Burns, who has been working as Celtic FC's head of youth development.
'International experience'
"Tommy was always at the top of my list of candidates for this position," Vogts said on the Scottish Football Association's (SFA) official website on Wednesday. "I wanted someone with international experience as a player and coach who knows Scottish football inside out. I am delighted that he has accepted my offer to join the Scotland backroom team and I am looking forward to working with him."
UEFA coaching licence
Burns won eight Scotland caps in the 1980s and played for Celtic for 16 years. He also managed the club from July 1994 to May 1997. He holds his UEFA coaching licence and has previously worked as an assistant coach with the Scotland B and Under-21 teams.
'Excited and honoured'
"I am very excited and honoured to be asked, and I am looking forward to helping Berti achieve all his ambitions for Scotland," Burns said. "My role is essentially to make his job easier, and I will be there on a match-by-match basis to help the players as best I can. Together I am sure we will give Scotland a team to be proud of."
Paris match
Burns said he would continue in his role at Celtic while working alongside Vogts, who replaced Craig Brown following Scotland's failure to qualify for the World Cup. Their first match in charge will be the friendly international against FIFA World Cup holders France in Paris on 27 March.
