Wieghorst woe for Denmark

Midfield player Morten Wieghorst has been forced to withdraw from Denmark's UEFA EURO 2004™ squad.

Brøndby IF midfield player Morten Wieghorst has been forced to withdraw from Denmark's UEFA EURO 2004™squad.

Knee injury
The experienced international has been struggling with a left knee injury and decided he would not be fit in time for the finals after meeting up with Morten Olsen's squad at their training camp in Vebæk, north of Copenhagen. "I feel sorry for Morten Wieghorst, but I support his decision completely," said Olsen.

Midfield engine
The Denmark coach has promised to name Wieghorst's replacement some time after the friendly game against Estonia on Sunday, but the 33-year-old's departure represents a real setback for Denmark, who rely on his dynamism in midfield.

Three places to fill
Wieghorst was one of a 21-man squad named by Olsen on 12 May. Besides finding his replacement, the coach must also decide on two other players to take with him to Portugal to bring the squad up to the regulation 23.
