Article body
Frisk in charge
A Swedish team headed by Anders Frisk will take charge of the Estádio José Alvalade showdown between Spain and Portugal on Sunday. The winners of that fixture will be guaranteed a place in the quarter-finals, although Greece could finish top of Group A by defeating Russia in Faro-Loulé. Gilles Veissière will referee the match at the Estádio Algarve, with fellow French officials Frédéric Arnault and Serge Vallin running the lines.
Man in the middle
Lucílio Cardoso Cortez Batista of Portugal has been put in charge of the Group C game between Bulgaria and Denmark tomorrow, and will be accompanied by assistants and compatriots Paulo Januário and José Cardinal. Switzerland's Urs Meier will be the man in the middle at the Estádio do Dragão when Italy tackle Sweden later that evening, with Francesco Buragina and Rudolf Käppeli assisting him.
Riley appointed
England's Michael Riley will referee the Estádio do Bessa Século XXI game between Latvia and Germany as the second round of Group D matches get under way on Saturday afternoon. The action then moves on to Aveiro, where Manuel Enrique Mejuto González takes charge of the Netherlands-Czech Republic match. Oscar David Martínez Samaniego and Rafael Guerrero Alonso are his assistants.
Experience and understanding
Twelve referees in all are officiating in the tournament and each will work alongside two assistant referees from his own country, as UEFA looks to use the experience and understanding between proven referee teams to achieve consistency in decision-making. Four other referees are also in Portugal as fourth officials for various matches, and together with the other referees, are ready to deputise in the event of injury or illness.
