Morale boost
Adrian Mutu, Daniel Pancu and Ionel Ganea struck late in the first half and Florin Bratu completed the scoring in the closing stages. Romania can now travel to Copenhagen for Wednesday's crunch game against Denmark in good heart.
Dominating from start
Romania coach Anghel Iordanescu fielded his strongest lineup despite five of his players being one booking away from suspension. They dominated from the start and soon looked certain to score.
Besic saves
On 20 minutes Razvan Rat had a shot turned on to the post by Luxembourg goalkeeper Alija Besic. The goalkeeper then did well to keep out a Mutu header and Pancu shot before, on 31 minutes, the crossbar came to his rescue from an Adrian Iencsi header.
Breakthrough comes
The breakthrough finally came in the 38th minute with a shot into the far corner by Mutu. Two minutes later Pancu shot into the top corner from 25 metres and then in the 43rd minute Dorinel Munteanu's shot from distance was not held by the goalkeeper and Ganea pounced to make it three.
Close shave
Cristian Chivu and Mutu were substituted at the break and Romania relaxed in the second period. They were almost punished on 64 minutes when Gordon Braun headed against the crossbar for Luxembourg.
Bratu opens account
Another goal did come but it was at the other end as, 13 minutes from time, Ganea's neat backheel let in substitute Florin Bratu to score his first goal for his country.
