Leeds United AFC striker has been restored to the England squad for Wednesday's friendly in Portugal.

Recall for forward
Smith was dropped hours after being called up for November's match against Denmark after being arrested in an alleged bottle-throwing incident for which no charges were eventually brought. He is now able to make his first appearance since being sent off in the 2-2 draw with F.Y.R. Macedonia in October 2002.

Kirkland returns
Liverpool FC goalkeeper Chris Kirkland is also back in the squad in place of Leicester City FC's Ian Walker, while Middlesbrough FC's experienced defender Gareth Southate is rewarded for recent good form in the absence of the suspended Rio Ferdinand and injured Jonathan Woodgate.

Gerrard out
Midfield player Steven Gerrard has been left out as his partner is due to give birth, but Liverpool team-mate Michael Owen returns after an injury absence along with Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves. Gary Neville is out through a thigh injury. The match in Faro-Loulé is part of England's build-up to UEFA EURO 2004™, where they are drawn in Group B with France, Switzerland and Croatia.

England squad
James, Robinson, Kirkland, Mills, Carragher, Ashley Cole, Bridge, Phil Neville, Campbell, Terry, Southgate, Beckham, Lampard, Hargreaves, Butt, Scholes, Joe Cole, Jenas, Dyer, Owen, Heskey, Rooney, Smith, Vassell.
