Brincat to bow out

Malta's Joe Brincat will retire from international football after next month's Group 1 qualifier against Cyprus.

Sixteen years after winning his first Malta cap, Joe Brincat has announced he will retire from international football after next month's UEFA EURO 2004™ Group 1 qualifier against Cyprus.

Missing against Slovenia
The Sliema Wanderers FC midfield player did not feature in the 18-man squad for the home defeat against Slovenia earlier this week, having suffered a muscle strain. At 33, Brincat recently helped Sliema land their 24th Maltese Premier League title but believes the time is right to depart the international stage after 102 appearances and five goals.

'Lucky player'
"I gave my best to the national team and at this point I feel I need more time to concentrate on my club career," he said. "I would like to thank the Malta Football Association for backing me in the 16 years I have spent as a national player. I have been one of those lucky players to have surpassed the 100-appearance milestone for my country. Now it is time to step aside, and make way for the up-and-coming youngsters. My only wish is to end my international career with a good results against Cyprus on June 7."

Strained relationship
Brincat added that his strained relationship with national coach Siegfried Held had played a part in his decision. "I do not agree with Mr Held's plans," he said. "I have always been a ball player, something which the coach disagrees with, and which does not go for me as regards my role and style."
