Söderberg plans to step down

Tommy Söderberg will leave his post as joint-coach of Sweden at the end of their UEFA EURO 2004™ campaign.

'Time for a change'
"The dream is to round it all off in Portugal, after that I'll step aside. I think that everyone feels that the time has come for a change," said Söderberg, who works as Sweden's joint-coach alongside Lars Lagerbäck.

Replaced Svensson
Söderberg, 55, took charge of the national team in 1997, after Tommy Svensson resigned, and some 12 months later was joined by Lagerbäck. Both men have contracts until December 2004.

Portugal goal
Together the pair have taken Sweden to UEFA EURO 2000™ and last year's FIFA World Cup finals and are now chasing a third successive qualification - which would be a record for Sweden.

Top of section
The Swedes are currently top of their qualifying section for EURO 2004™ but should they fail to qualify Söderberg would step down in October. "If we fail there's no point in me staying," he said. "But we've got our minds set on winning the group, and we've got it all in our own hands."
