Danish delight while Spain slump

Denmark beat neighbours Norway and Spain slipped up against Greece in Saturday's UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers.

All to play for
Morten Olsen's side defeated fellow Scandinavians Norway 1-0 to leapfrog their near-neighbours and take over at the top of Group 2 by virtue of a superior head-to-head record (click here for full report). In the other game in the section, Romania defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 (click here), meaning that a single point separates the top three sides. All are in action on Wednesday, with Norway at home to Romania while Denmark travel to Luxembourg.

Surprise defeat
There was a major upset in Group 6, as Spain were defeated 1-0 at home by Greece (click here). Ukraine took full advantage as an injury-time winner earned a 4-3 success at home to Armenia (click here) to leave the group suddenly wide open. Spain visit Northern Ireland on Wednesday, while second-placed Ukraine are away to Greece, the side immediately below them on head-to-head results only.

Swiss setback
In Group 10, section leaders Switzerland seemed to be on course for a home victory against Russia that would have strengthened their claim for automatic qualification as they took an early 2-0 lead, but the away side fought back to salvage a 2-2 draw (click here). Elsewhere, a last-minute own goal gave the Republic of Ireland a 2-1 win at home to Albania (click here), which moved Brian Kerr's side within two points of the Swiss. On Wednesday, Ireland play at home to Georgia, while Switzerland entertain Albania.

Turkey back on top
Turkey moved back to the top of Group 7 with a narrow 1-0 win away to Slovakia (click here), while F.Y.R. Macedonia defeated Liechtenstein 3-1 (click here). On Wednesday, Turkey are at home to Macedonia while second-placed England take on Slovakia.

Hard-fought win
The Netherlands moved clear at the top of Group 3 with a hard-earned 2-0 win in Belarus (click here), Patrick Kluivert scoring a record 38th goal for his country, while Moldova secured a famous 1-0 victory at home to Austria (click here). However, the Czech Republic can regain the group leadership in midweek if they defeat Moldova at home, while Austria play Belarus.

Hopes hit
Serbia and Montenegro's qualification hopes suffered a significant setback as they fell to a surprise 3-0 defeat in Finland in the only game played in Group 9 (click here). Dejan Savicevic's side travel to Azerbaijan on Wednesday in search of a vital victory, while Finland are at home to Italy.

Honours even
The top two in Group 5 shared the points, as Germany earned a 1-1 draw away to Scotland (click here), while Iceland defeated Faroe Islands 2-1 (click here). Germany next visit the Faroe Islands on Wednesday, the same night Iceland travel to Lithuania with just two points separating the top four teams.

Three-point advantage
Bulgaria and Belgium drew 2-2 in Sofia in Group 8 (click here) a result that, coupled with Estonia's 2-0 win at home to Andorra (click here), left Bulgaria three points clear at the top. Belgium will be looking for goals at home to Andorra in midweek, while Croatia travel to Estonia the same day.

Missed chances
Group 1 leaders France did not play, giving either Slovenia or Israel the chance to stake a claim for second place. However, the game between the two sides ended goalless (click here), while Cyprus were 2-1 winners in Malta (click here). The next games in the section will not be played until September, when France play Cyprus and the return between Slovenia and Israel takes place.
