Liechtenstein 1-0 Saudi Arabia
Rare victory
Franz Burgmeier's first-half goal separated the sides and ensured Liechtenstein added a precious victory to previous triumphs against China, in a friendly in June 1982, and Azerbaijan, in a UEFA EURO 2000™ qualifier in October 1988.
Early chance
Burgmeier’s fierce shot from outside the box travelled fast and low to nestle in the back of the net in the 22nd minute after his side had gone close to opening the scoring as early as the third minute when Fabio D'Elia’s towering header ricocheted off the post.
No rhythm
The Saudis failed to find the rhythm which came considerably more easily to them in their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign for Korea/Japan and, despite keeping the match competitive, they fashioned few noteworthy chances. They were lucky not to concede again when striker Thomas Beck wasted a chance to double the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Next fixture
Liechtenstein are bottom of UEFA European Championship qualifying Group 7 behind leaders England, Turkey, Slovakia and F.Y.R Macedonia, who they face in Skopje on June 7.
