Latvia look for early lift

Latvia coach Aleksandrs Starkovs believes that only a win or draw will do against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

Tough draw
Despite being handed a stern challenge in the draw, which has paired Aleksandrs Starkovs' side with perennial contenders Germany and the Netherlands in addition to the Czechs, the Latvia coach predicted a strong showing in his side's first game in Portugal.

Underdogs tag
"We cannot be favourites when playing Germany, the Czech Republic or the Netherlands, but in the game against the Czechs we will be happy only with a win or a draw," the confident coach said. "We have our own advantages and we are going to show them.

'Great enthusiasm'
"We start our preparations here in Portugal with great enthusiasm," Starkovs continued. "I do not know who will play. I am still searching for the best option, but it's not too much of a headache to be honest. Everything's going as planned."

Clean bill of health
Starkovs has a fully-fit squad at his disposal and has been boosted by the news that captain Vitalis Astafjevs, goalkeeper Aleksandrs Kolinko and defender Aleksandrs Isakovs have all recovered from minor injuries. "Everyone is healthy, everyone is in an excellent mood, and everyone has a great appetite," Starkovs said.
