France have confirmed that Willy Sagnol is unlikely to play any further part in UEFA EURO 2004™ after breaking his left arm in yesterday's 3-1 victory against Switzerland, a success that set up a quarter-final against Greece as Group B winners.
Doctor 'pessimistic'
"Sagnol had medical tests today which revealed he broke his left forearm," a team spokesman said. "Doctor Jean-Marcel Ferret is very pessimistic about the chances of Sagnol being able to play again before the end of the tournament." Sagnol suffered the same injury with FC Bayern München three months ago.
Other injuries
Patrick Vieira and William Gallas have also picked up injuries. Vieira strained a thigh muscle while Gallas twisted his left ankle, and both will be monitored on a day-to-day basis.
Santini pleased
Meanwhile, coach Jacques Santini has said he is pleased with the holders' performances so far. "The media would like us to beat every opponent 5-0, but I disagree," he said. "Some say we are lucky to be in the quarter-finals, but we secured seven points. We know what has to be improved."
No surprise
He also said he was pleased with the switch of Robert Pires to the left, where he plays for Arsenal FC, and added that he was not surprised to be facing Greece, who finished ahead of Spain in Group A. "When you defeat Portugal and draw against Spain, this is anything but a surprise," he said.
Reunion
After last night's match, the France team met up with their families for the first time since travelling to Portugal.
