Sunday showdown
Iñaki Sáez's side were dominant against Greece for much of Wednesday's other game, but were ultimately forced to settle for a 1-1 draw that leaves them top with Greece on four points, but the group wide open and Sunday's showdown with Portugal still to come.
Fighting for victory
"After yesterday's win, Portugal are still fighting for the [UEFA] European Championship," Portugal midfield player Costinha said. "To succeed in this competition, it's necessary to overcome a lot of great teams and that's what we want to do on Sunday."
New mood
After their dispiriting opening-day defeat by Greece, the hosts looked to be on their way out of the tournament, but Costinha summed up the new mood in their camp. "Spain are a great team but so are Portugal, and we are ready to beat them," said Costinha, who is no stranger to success after helping FC Porto win the UEFA Champions League last month.
'Nervy performance'
Against Russia, coach Luiz Felipe Scolari made four changes to the side that had lost to Greece, including the introduction of playmaker Deco at the expense of Rui Costa. Despite a nervy performance, the changes paid dividends as goals in each half from Maniche and Rui Costa earned victory.
'Good form'
Scolari's ruthless streak appears to have wrested the Group A momentum back in Portugal's favour, according to Costinha. "We are now in good form going into the Spain match," he said. "We are playing at home, with the support of our people and we will try to take advantage to progress in the competition."
