Official recognition for Rehhagel

UEFA's technical study group has given fulsome praise to Otto Rehhagel, the German coach who has taken Greece to a remarkable European title.

Fantastic job
UEFA technical director Andy Roxburgh said that Rehhagel had done a "fantastic" job in taking an unsung group of players and turning them into conquerors at UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal.

Single-minded vision
"Otto has fixed ideas and has imposed them on his players, who have responded brilliantly," said Roxburgh. "He came to a UEFA coaching course a couple of months ago and was very expressive. He said he wasn't going to change his style, hoped he would do well in the tournament, and you have to give every credit to him.

'A coaches' coach'
"Otto was already a coaches' coach, everybody was always very impressed by Otto, but now he has reached an almost unparalleled level for an international coach, where he has taken an unfancied team and defied all the odds and gone all the way to the final," added Roxburgh. "He has raised his status to a level which probably he couldn't have imagined before."

Praise for Scolari
The UEFA technical director also applauded Portugal's Luiz Felipe Scolari for his feat in leading the host country to the EURO 2004™ final. "He's done a fantastic job as well, and obviously everyone in Portugal is quite sad that he wasn't able to take them to the title," he said.

General credit
"We've been very impressed with a lot of coaches at this final round for the ability that they have shown," Roxburgh added.
