Rooney breaks bone in foot

England striker Wayne Rooney will be out of action for up to a month after breaking a bone in his foot in the defeat against Portugal.

England striker Wayne Rooney will be out of action for up to a month, coach Sven-Göran Eriksson said on Thursday after the quarter-final defeat on penalties by Portugal.

Broken bone
Eriksson indicated that Rooney, who limped off in the first half, had broken a bone in his foot. "It's the same injury as [David] Beckham before the [2002 FIFA] World Cup, he will be out maybe a month," Eriksson said.

Four goals

Rooney scored four goals in Group B but was substituted after 27 minutes tonight after damaging his foot in a challenge with Jorge Andrade. Portugal beat England 6-5 on spot-kicks.
