Kidd concern for England

England's assistant coach, Brian Kidd, has undergone surgery for prostate cancer.

Coaching team
The 54-year-old has been part of Sven-Göran Eriksson's coaching team since January last year when he replaced Steve McLaren, the Middlesbrough FC manager, who stepped down to concentrate fully on his club commitments.

'Serious operation'
A Football Association spokesman said: "We are aware that Brian has undergone a serious operation. We all look forward to him making a speedy recovery."

Important role
The FA has yet to comment on whether Kidd, Sir Alex Ferguson's No2 at Manchester United FC for much of the 1990s, will be fit to join the England party at UEFA EURO 2004™. Kidd is the man responsible for England's tactical preparations, working alongside Dave Sexton and Sammy Lee.
