And the Sporting Clube de Portugal player told reporters at the squad's training camp in Alcochete that his team are not experiencing any extra pressure as hosts. He said: "Pressure is usual in football. EURO 2004™ starts in a few days and anxiety is normal at these times. We are confident and united to begin the [UEFA] European Championship with a win, responding to the expectations of our country."
Greece warning
He also stressed that Portugal would not be underestimating their first Group A opponents, Greece. "They are a strong team, with a solid defence and a dangerous counterattacking game," he said. "We played against them recently [a 1-1 draw in November 2003] and know what we have to do to win on Saturday, but for sure we will face difficulties at the Dragão stadium."
Maniche aim
Meanwhile, midfield player Maniche said he was delighted to be involved at EURO 2004™ after his surprise call-up by Luiz Felipe Scolari, the reward for a brilliant UEFA Champions League campaign with FC Porto. He said: "I'm happy being part of this group, and now I'm working to win a place in the starting eleven for the opening game."
