Germany stunned by Hungary

Germany 0-2 HungaryRudi Völler's side head to UEFA EURO 2004™ on a low note after a home defeat.

Germany 0-2 Hungary

German concern
Völler, an interested spectator in Amsterdam when Germany's EURO 2004™ group rivals the Netherlands lost 1-0 to the Republic of Ireland 24 hours previously, could only observe in vain as his side stumbled their way through another losing friendly. Having recently suffered a 5-1 reverse in Romania, the German national team leave for Portugal with their supporters clearly concerned about their chances of even advancing from a group which also includes the Czech Republic and Latvia.

Disappointing performance
The Hungarians, who last won against Germany in January 1985 when their current coach Lothar Matthäus played against them, stunned the home side after seven minutes when Torghelle eluded Christian Wörns to shoot past Oliver Kahn from eleven metres. The Germans, poor in defence and lacking any sustained enterprise from midfield, fell further behind shortly after the half-hour when a Hungarian counterattack ended with Torghelle chesting the ball down before beating Kahn.

Király outstanding
Völler's side attempted to get back into the match after the interval, but Hertha BSC Berlin goalkeeper Gabor Király thwarted their best efforts. "Hungary got off to a much better start than we did and we were punished for our lack of concentration in the opening minutes," Völler said. "We're all disappointed, it would have been a lot easier travelling to Portugal with confidence boosted by another win. We simply don't score enough goals."
