Article body
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has named his side for the opening match of UEFA EURO 2004™ against Greece and confirmed that Maniche would start alongside FC Porto team-mate Costinha in midfield.
Starting lineup
Scolari announced that Ricardo will play in goal with Paulo Ferreira and Rui Jorge the two full-backs. Fernando Couto will partner Jorge Andrade in the centre of defence, with Maniche joining Costinha in central midfield and Luís Figo and Simão Sabrosa on the wings. Playmaker Rui Costa plays just behind lone striker Pauleta.
Attacking options
"Greece show great defensive consistency, with two solid lines behind the ball," Scolari said when asked about his selection. "Maniche has more to give as an effective offensive presence, including long-range passing and shots on goal.
Total success
"At this moment, tomorrow is the most important game because it is the next. The key for EURO 2004™ is the first and the last game, because if we win both we will totally succeed. Tomorrow we will play with determination and do all we can to achieve a convincing win."
Ten contenders
Despite his optimistic mood, Scolari admitted there were a number of contenders who might ultimately emerge victorious in the competition, saying: "From the 16 teams that have qualified, at least ten are candidates to be in the final."
Portuguese union
Scolari admitted that his side faced additional pressure as hosts, but said: "We live with this pressure every day and know how to be settled and calm. The flags are in the windows and we are together to achieve something important for Portugal."
Figo fit
Figo was also eager for the kick-off, saying: "[I am] prepared and fit for the game, which is going to be very difficult if we don't run more than the Greeks. We are anxious to start the competition and pay back all the support that we have received recently."
Couto call
Portugal captain Fernando Couto made an appeal to the fans ahead of the Greece game. "Support our team from the first minute and be behind us whatever happens during the game," he said. "We need all the support to be able to beat our opponents in this competition."
