Positive result
The 31-year-old Portuguese international took a drugs test after the SuperLiga match against Moreirense SC on 13 February. It was confirmed today that his A sample had returned a positive result.
Portugal regular
However, he is able to continue playing until the B sample result is known and will take his place in Portugal's squad for the friendly against Sweden next Wednesday. A regular in the Portugal squad, he offers competition for the left-back berth with FC Porto's Nuno Valente
'Dreadful situation'
The player believes the traces of Pulmicort came from a nasal spray he had been taking called 'Nasal Aqua', which is used to treat rhinitis. "I've got this rhinitis and my doctor told me I should use this medicine," said Rui Jorge. "I was suprised to hear this news as it's a dreadful situation. I hope this will not have a major impact on my career."
Sporting take responsibility
The Sporting medical team have taken responsibility for Rui Jorge's use of the product. According to club doctor José Gomes Pereira, players are allowed to use it provided the anti-doping committee is given prior warning.
'Warning given'
Dr Gomes Pereira said: "It's unthinkable that the player could be suspended for something like this. It was an administrative mistake for which which he has no responsibility. I tried to warn the doping authorities as fast as I could as soon as I knew Rui Jorge was using this medicine."
