The two countries met at the Stade de France on 1 March this year, with visitors Slovakia winning 2-1 in Paris and inflicting a first defeat on Les Bleus coach Raymond Domenech. These nations have played each other on two previous occasions, both in qualifying for EURO '96™, with France earning a goalless draw in Bratislava in September 1994 before recording a 4-0 victory in Nantes the following April.
