Portugal try out José António

VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach defender José António has joined the Portugal squad for the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Poland.

The 29-year-old centre-back has received his first call-up from Luiz Felipe Scolari as the coach fills the gap left by the omission of FC Porto's Ricardo Costa. "We watched José António in two matches and we think he could be useful in games like the one we face in Poland - he plays in a very competitive league," said Scolari. PSV Eindhoven defender Manuel Da Costa has also been selected but Scolari will allow him to play in Portugal's UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off against Russia. Fulham FC's Luís Boa Morte misses out through injury, but Valencia CF right-back Luis Miguel and Club Atlético de Madrid midfielder Maniche return.
