FC Schalke 04's German international striker Gerald Asamoah will be out for several months after breaking his leg in UEFA Cup action last night.

Double break
The 27-year-old had to be stretchered off during his side's 3-1 defeat at AS Nancy-Lorraine and underwent surgery in a local hospital. Asamoah has broken the shin and calf bones in his left leg and is facing a spell of several months on the sidelines. He had come on as a substitute at half-time for defender Rafinha.

Bad day
To make matters even worse, Schalke had banked on the income from playing in the UEFA Cup group stage only to bow out against Nancy 3-2 on aggregate. "This is a very bad day for us," said coach Mirko Slomka. "We lost and Asamoah is badly injured. This is hard to take. We have to concentrate on other things now."
