Austria mourns coach Senekowitsch

Austrian football is in mourning for former coach Helmut Senekowitsch, who masterminded their famous 1978 FIFA World Cup victory against West Germany.

Austrian football is in mourning for former national coach Helmut Senekowitsch, who died on Sunday at the age of 73.

World Cup delight
Capped 18 times as a player during his time at SK Sturm Graz, Real Betis BalompiƩ and FC Wacker Tirol, Senekowitsch scored five international goals and featuring at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. He stated his coaching career in 1971 with Grazer AK and after spells with FC Linz, winning the 1974 championship, and FC Admira Wacker he coached Austria from 1976 until June 1978. In the latter year he took his team to the World Cup in Argentina and masterminded a 3-2 second group stage win that eliminated holders West Germany, one of the most famous results in Austrian football history.

Minute's silence
After stepping down as Austria coach, Senekowitsch took charge of several teams in Mexico, Spain, Greece, Germany, Austria and Cyprus. There will be a minute's silence in his honour before Austria's friendly against Chile in Vienna on Tuesday and the players will wear black armbands.
