Rooney ruled out of England games

Wayne Rooney is to miss a number of vital matches for club and country after breaking his left foot on Sunday – not least England's September qualifiers.

Manchester United FC have confirmed that forward Wayne Rooney is likely to be sidelined for two months after breaking his left foot against Reading FC on Sunday, ruling him out of England's home double-header against Israel and Russia next month.

Fourth place
"It will be two months out," said United manager Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday. "To be on the safe side, we would say it is going to be two months, but hopefully he can come back quicker." As well as missing the opening matchdays of the UEFA Champions League, the 21-year-old will sit out the UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers against Israel and Russia on 8 and 12 September – and possibly the Group E visit of Estonia and trip to Moscow in mid-October. England are fourth in the section, three points behind leaders Croatia.
