Ferreira's salute to mature Moutinho

Paulo Ferreira praised his team-mate João Moutinho after the 21-year-old's impressive display during Portugal's opening 2-0 Group A defeat of Turkey in Geneva.

Maturity
Moutinho rounded off a fine performance by laying on the second goal for substitute Raul Meireles but Ferreira was not surprised the 21-year-old Sporting Clube de Portugal midfielder was able to show his class in his major finals debut. "It was important for him as it was the first time he has played in a competition like this, but Moutinho showed great maturity," Ferreira said. "He has been playing well with his club now for some years, where he has played a lot of games in the big European competitions, and he now has a lot of experience. He showed today that now nothing can faze him."

Satisfaction
Ferreira also expressed a satisfaction at his own display, saying he has started to feel comfortable in the left-back spot he seldom occupies for Chelsea FC. "It's a different position for me, but it's not the first time I've played there now," he said. "I'm satisfied with my performance but more importantly with the team's performance in general." He also had a word for defensive colleague Pepe after his Carlsberg Man Of The Match Award and first international goal to open the scoring. "Pepe of course is a great player and important for us, and also today managed to start things off," Ferreira said.

Looking forward
The 29-year-old already had the next game against the Czech Republic on his mind, and he knows Luiz Felipe Scolari's side face a stern test against a team fresh from beating co-hosts Switzerland 1-0. "Now we have to look to Wednesday – we're already studying how the Czechs play," admitted Ferreira. "They've also started the competition well with a win and we know it will be a difficult match, but we have started well and we hope to continue in this way and get a good result."
