The FC Steaua Bucureşti player was one of 18 players who, along with their families, met up for a pre-tournament get-together and training camp in Belek, Turkey, this week. The 26-year-old damaged cartilage in his right knee on the volleyball court, however, and has had to pull out of the 26-man provisional party for the finals. Romania coach Victor Piţurcă has yet to decide whether he will name a replacement for Petre, but will make an official announcement once the full selection assembles on Thursday at the National Football Centre in Mogosaia. Petre played four times in qualifying and usually operates as a defensive midfielder.
